13) Bigg MarketThis is Newcastle's open air market, now a shadow of its former glory. The memorial was actually put in place by the temperance society. (It has since been renovated) The area of the Bigg market has a number of restaurants and pubs.
14) Central StationThis is the main railway station for Newcastle, and is on the East Coast Main line, between London and Scotland. It also services the lines to Sunderland and Carlisle. It boasts two station buffets a burger king and a concourse coffee bar.. It was designed in the 19th Century by Richard Grainger.
15) Coffee barsCafe bars are part of the city centre life of Newcastle upon Tyne. We have a Starbucks (pictured) and other independents. There used to be a Coffee Republic, but this closed in November 2003. As well as your coffee they serve a variety of snack foods. The popularity of coffee bars also lead the Northumberland Street branch of McDonalds to set up a coffee bar type section.
16) Groups around the MonumentGrey's monument, put up to celebrate the great parliamentary reform bill of 1832, attracts a number of groups promoting various view points. We have religious groups and pressure groups. Occasionally there have been impromptu concerts given of ethnic music. The man pictured is a regular at weekends. The monument also serves as a meeting point for people going on a night out on the town.
17) The Tyne and Wear MetroIn the 1980's the Tyne and Wear Metro was built, as the Geordie Underground, (although most of it is above ground). It is a cheap way of getting from the city centre to the coast or the airport.
18) Eldon Square shopping centreThis is the monument entrance of one of Newcastle's biggest shopping centres (A shopping mall for those across the pond). It has two levels and there is quite a variety of shops and restaurants through out. There is even a website for Eldon Square.
