My Favourite Foods
One of my favourite subjects is food. This section is dedicated to some of
my favourite dishes
1) Fish and Chips
Being a Brit, one of my favourite
dishes is Fish and chips. This is white fish, usually cod, but
sometimes Haddock, coated in batter and deep fried. Served with what
our cousins across the pond describe as "Country Fries".
You also serve them with salt and vinegar. A number of sites
are set up for aficionados of this delicacy
- Sea Fish Industry Authority

National Federation of Fish Friers
Fish & Chip Takeaway Guide
- This
site is for a fish and chip shop in Northern Ireland, but
has a history of Fish and Chips
Love Chips - From
the British Potato Council
2) Haggis
- Living Newcastle upon Tyne which is
the last major city before Scotland on the East Coast
mainline (Berwick
upon Tweed is a town ), we get Scottish food,
such as Haggis. Because of the recipe, some
south of the border treat it as a joke, not I.
It is traditionally served with mashed potato
and mashed turnip (Neep in Scotland) . Haggis
is traditionaly served around Hogmany (New
Year) or Burns Night (25th January) On Burns
night, the poem Ode to a haggis, by Robert
Burns is recited.

3) Pub Meals
- Sometimes I will go to try a lunch in a Pub (Public
House to overseas visitors). In this day of
themed resteraunts, e.g. Italian, Indian,
Chinese, Mexican, KFC, or Burger Bars, the
only place to get traditional British Cuisine,
as far as I can make out, is the British Pub. For a time I
went sampling what they
have to offer in this respect, along with a
glass of Cola. Some seem to range from sandwiches and pies , through only to several
course meals. It was suggested I publish
my findings so I set up my own site dedicated to them. So click on this link to see my
efforts.....
4) Leek and Carrots (with the odd potato)
I discovered that leeks and carrots seem to go quite well
together. Take an equal number of leeks and peeled carrots. Slice them thinly
into the same cooking pot. Take a washed potato, unpeeled and cut it finely into
a pot. Add a vegetable stock cube and a bare half level teaspoon of powdered
chilli. Add Water and bring to the boil and simmer for about half an hour. This
makes a fine broth, soup, way of cooking vegetables. Even the liquor can be
consumed. Nothing is wasted.
